Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide Sedation) at Prakhya Dental

For patients who want a calmer appointment — it works quickly, wears off completely, and you drive yourself home.

overview

What Is Happy Gas?

Nitrous oxide (happy gas) is a mild sedative gas administered through a small nose mask during dental treatment.

It produces a feeling of relaxation and mild euphoria, reduces anxiety, and raises the pain threshold without putting you to sleep.

why HAPPY GAS?

What Does Happy Gas Feel Like?

Within about three minutes, most patients notice a warm, slightly tingling sensation — often in the hands and feet first. Anxiety drops noticeably. The treatment proceeds, and when it’s done the mask is removed and replaced with pure oxygen for a few minutes.

Effects wear off completely within 5–10 minutes. Most patients drive themselves home.

frequently asked questions

Can I eat before happy gas?
A light meal 2–3 hours before is recommended. A heavy meal immediately before can cause nausea during the procedure. Avoid a completely empty stomach.
Will I be unconscious?
No. Nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation — you remain awake, responsive, and able to communicate at all times. It reduces anxiety and discomfort without removing awareness.
Can my child have happy gas?
Yes, for appropriate candidates. Nitrous oxide is commonly used in paediatric dentistry. Your dentist will assess suitability at the consultation, taking into account your child’s age, health history, and what the appointment involves.
Does happy gas replace local anaesthetic?
No. Happy gas reduces anxiety and raises comfort thresholds, but it is not an anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic is still used for any procedure that would normally require it.
Is there any additional cost for happy gas?
Yes — there is an additional fee for nitrous oxide sedation. Your dentist will confirm the cost at your consultation so you can factor it into your decision.
How long does the effect last?
Nitrous oxide takes effect in 3–5 minutes and wears off completely within 5–10 minutes of stopping. There is no hangover effect and no restrictions on eating, drinking or driving after the appointment.
